Sunday's Ageless Wisdom Mystery School

"Nothing rests; everything moves; everything vibrates."

This week we take-up the third of the Kybalion's Seven Hermetic Keys — the Principle of Vibration. Contemporary scientists now agree: "Everything vibrates." But just how ancient Egyptians and Greeks came to this understanding may remain a mystery?

"Nothing rests, everything moves" includes all matter, physical energy and Spirit (metaphysical energy). But vibration doesn't stop there. The First Hermetic Principle in the Kybalion says, "All is Mind." So, then, the Universal Divine Mind and the corresponding little minds of humans must also vibrate.

Indeed, mind does vibrate, and in future lessons we'll explain its polarity, rhythm, & gender as well as the underlying Principle of Cause and Effect. But in this third lesson, we'll focus on the frequency of this eternal and infinite vibration ... this dance of energy and matter.

Empirical physics teaches us to think of energy has having a vibratory rate, but to think of matter in terms of its atomic number, that is, the number of protons in a atom's nucleus. However, mystics, yogis and shamans of all cultures think of energy and matter as a vibrating continuum or spectrum.

The 19th Century mystic, Helena P. Blavatsky wrote, "Matter is Spirit vibrating at its lowest frequency; Spirit is Matter vibrating at its highest frequency." This single line may explain why Albert Einstein always had a copy of Blavatsky's "The Secret Doctrine" on his desk — before and after he became known for equating energy and matter (E=mc2).

The concept of a metaphysical spectrum that includes all matter and energy helps us understand esoteric philosophers when they use phrases and terms like, "The One Life," and "Everything is Sacred." In other words, the distinction between Spirit and Matter is merely one of appearances. The frequencies of Spirit are simply too high for the physical senses of humans to discern, though the human mind can be trained to sense and even direct Spirit into the Material World. In Egyptian and Greek Alchemy, this process is known as "transmutation."

Sunday's Ageless Wisdom Mystery School

"As above, so below; as below, so above."

As we progress to the second of the Seven Hermetic Keys presented in The Kybalion, we'll draw upon the most famous alchemical document in the history of the world — the Emerald Tablet of Hermes Trismegistus, also known as the Egyptian God Thoth. According to ancient Greek and Roman scholars, the alchemical secrets of the Egyptians were carved in bas relief on this magnificent green stone.

The most famous translation of the Emerald Tablet was written by Sir Isaac Newton. And the best known statement in his translation is the Second Rubric: "That which is Below is like that which is Above, and that which is Above is like that which is Below to do the miracles of the One Only Thing." The concept has come to be known in esoteric philosophy and mysticism as, "The Principle of Correspondence."

In his book, Isaac Newton: The Last Sorcerer, researcher Michael White wrote, "Newton was motivated by a deep-rooted commitment to the notion that alchemical wisdom extended back to ancient times. The Hermetic tradition — the body of alchemical knowledge — was believed to have originated in the mists of time and to have been given to humanity through supernatural agents."

Newton was so secretive about his alchemical experiments, that many people suggested he may have succeeded in transmuting lead into gold. But it's likely Newton, like most other European scientists and philosophers of the Renaissance Era, recognized alchemical transmutation as an allegory for uplifting conscious awareness from the physical world of appearances to Spiritual realms of Love & Light.

Sunday's Ageless Wisdom Mystery School

Without a doubt, one of the most enduring of the Mind Science classics from the early 20th Century is a thin but pithy volume entitled, The Kybalion. Written anonymously in 1908, the authors identified themselves only as The Three Initiates. Some students believe the book was written by Paul Foster Case, a member of the Order of the Golden Dawn and founder of the Builders of The Adytum. A somewhat more plausible theory is that it was penned by popular New Thought writer, William W. Atkinson, who also used the pen names Theron Q. Dumont and Yogi Ramacharaka.

Over the next seven weeks in The Ageless Wisdom Mystery School, we will discuss in the seven key Hermetic Principles revealed in The Kybalion. They are:

I. The principle of Mentalism - "The All is Mind; The Universe is Mental."

II. The principle of Correspondence - "As above, so below; as below, so above."

VI. The principle of Cause & Effect - "Every Cause has its Effect; every effect has its Cause; everything happens according to Law; Chance is but a name for Law not recognized; there are many planes of causation, but nothing escapes the Law."

VII. The principle of Gender - "Gender is in everything; everything has its Masculine & Feminine Principles; Gender manifests on all planes."

At first glance, the words "unity" and "diversity" might appear to be opposites. Paradoxically, however, they're more like two sides of the same coin.

Just as both magnetic north and south cannot exist without the other, unity requires diversity and vice versa. Logically, the strength of unity might seem to require all elements to be in agreement, aligned and identical. In fact, the strength of unity comes out of diversity.

This principle is apparent in the environment, where the gradual extinction of species is weakening the Earth's life-support eco-system. The synergy of the animal, plant and mineral kingdoms is supported by diverse and antagonistic forms of life.

Curiously, the Supreme Court in Associated Press v. U.S. (1945) wrote that "the widest possible dissemination of information from diverse and antagonistic sources is essential to the welfare of the public." Here again we see the strength of diversity revealing the inherent weakness of uniformity.

Of the two basic ways to think — logic and intuition — only logic is taught in most schools. For the most part, intuition as a source of understanding and awareness remains ignored.

In fact, intuition is so poorly understood in academic circles that it is still considered to be a feminine quality, as in "a woman's intuition." Yet one of the world's most highly regarded scientists, Albert Einstein, once wrote, "The only real valuable thing is intuition" — a remarkable statement, especially when you consider who said it.

Einstein's proclamation is not unlike the spiritual tenet that says, "Love is the only thing that's real." In other words, intuition may be a quality of love — not the emotional feeling called love, but rather "Love" as in "the spiritual essence of All Things," the Great Ocean of Spirit in which all things are One.

"It is not healthy to be thinking all the time. Thinking is intended for acquiring knowledge or applying it. It is not essential living."

There is a very important difference between applied thinking and the mental drift that underlies it. For example, imagine reading a book for 10 or 15 minutes, then putting it down to rest your eyes. Even if you close your eyes, your mind will continue thinking — maybe about what you just read, but perhaps something else enters your mind. One thing is certain: the thoughts don't stop. Even when you sleep, your thoughts continue, as evidenced by the dreams you often remember upon waking.

Only through a deliberate practice of contemplation, meditation or mindfulness can we detach from our thoughts long enough to witness our "mental drift" without judgment. In time, the gaps between the thoughts grow longer and significant peace-of-mind can be established.

On the other hand, over-stimulation and general stress amplifies the number of thoughts competing for your attention in any given moment. Anxiety, worry, and apprehension is confusing and scary, creating even more stress and anxiety — in other words: Too much thinking (TMT).

Sunday's Ageless Wisdom Mystery School

"When people talk, listen completely. Most people never listen."

Hemingway is right. Not only do most people not listen to others, they don't even know how to listen. Did anyone ever teach you how to listen? Unless you're a trained counselor or therapist, it's unlikely.

People talk as if time is a hole that needs to be filled — as if even short periods of silence are not only awkward, but somehow threatening. Oddly, the people who are most likely to talk up a storm rather than listen carefully are those who are most insecure and confused.

So what are people doing when they're not speaking and could be listening? Well, usually they're planning what they'll say at their next opportunity to speak. Because most of us know so little about ourselves, we fear spontaneity and must plan our speech in advance.

The evidence is most obvious in those who do not respond to what their partner in conversation has just said, but instead pick-up where they left off the last time they spoke.

Parents are especially guilty of failing to listen. Counselors and therapists commonly hear the complaint, "My children don't listen to me. I talk till I'm blue in the face, and they still won't listen." Asked if they ever listen to their children, you'll often get a slack-jawed, deer-in-the-headlights look as if that never occurred to them. After all, their parents didn't listen to them when they were children. The same is true for many bosses, managers, and supervisors in the workplace.

Listening carefully and acknowledging what you've heard is one of the greatest gifts you can give someone. You don't even need to agree with the person you're listening to. It's enough to simply play back what you've just heard them say.

Continents drift, molten lava oozes from earth's core through ancient volcanoes, and all the while, the weather follows its seasonal vagaries.

Certainly, organic lifeforms exist on this Earth Planet to experience life's opportunities for growth and improvement. Whether we humans learn and grow — and how much — is entirely up to each of us as individuals.

Sunday's Ageless Wisdom Mystery School

What do people mean when they say they're "spiritual but not religious?" A recent Newsweek poll indicates 30% of American adults now identify with that phrase. But what are they agreeing to? Is there something more here than a religious "none of the above?"

The significant part of the phrase, spiritual but not religious, is mostly the rejection of literal religious dogma, but not the existence of a metaphysical Absolute — a Creator, Divine Source, God, or Supreme Deity. Educated and reasonable people often cringe when they hear the Bible called "the infallible Word of God," pointing to:

Exodus 35:2 which calls for the death penalty for those who work on the Sabbath,
Exodus 21 :7 which promotes slavery,
Gen 29:17-28; II Sam 3:2-5 which condones polygamy,
II Sam 5:13; I Kings 11:3; II Chron 11:21 which affirms a man's right to keep concubines,
Deut 22:19; Mark 10:9 in which forbids divorce,
Lev.19:27 which forbids haircuts and beard trimming,
and Lev. 11:10 which describes eating shellfish as an abomination, ... etc.

Even the image of God as a Being with a humanoid form who lives in a castle in the sky challenges the intelligence of people born since the inception of the Space Age. Still, they do feel connected to Something that seems to embrace All That Is. So, as people become more educated, but orthodox churches resist reasonable reform, more and more people will describe themselves "spiritual but not religious."

Sunday's Ageless Wisdom Mystery School

An obsession is an intrusive thought or feeling that's very difficult or seemingly impossible to release. Similarly, a compulsion is an irresistible and persistent urge to continue a certain behavior pattern. Either or both conditions are called OCD — Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

OCD is an anxiety-based mental disorder that can take many forms. Commonly, OCD can lead to rituals about checking to make sure your door is locked or the stove is turned off before leaving home. Many people feel the need to double-check such things, but those with OCD have a difficult time releasing their anxious worries no matter how many times they check.

Other common forms of OCD include greatly exaggerated fears of germs and bacteria, a fixation on straightening pictures hanging on a wall or the fringe at the edge of an area rug. Hoarding worthless junk as if it had great value is another common type of OCD as is an excessive need to organize and order things.

So-called "obsessionals" are those who suffer recurring thoughts of unknowingly having injured someone. And these people will go to extremes in hopes of avoiding or mitigating such situations.

What these obsessive and compulsive behaviors have in common is stress. To paraphrase President Franklin D. Roosevelt, OCD is the fear of fear itself — an inability or unwillingness to truly face fear and accept reasonable risks.

Of course the irony here is that by its very nature, fear is frightening. We'd rather not face it. And so our problems continue.

One of the secrets to mastering fear is recognizing its relationship to ignorance. Once we begin to realize how ignorance supports and nourishes fear, we can apply the antidote — understanding.

Could it really be that simple? Can we actually solve all of our problems by finding the fear at its core, facing what we don't understand and learning about it until it no longer exists?

Sunday's Ageless Wisdom Mystery School

One of life's most difficult lessons is learning humility. We will learn about it one way or another, though perhaps not fully. It is simply too easy to see life's adversity and competitiveness as requiring us to be self-centered, boastful, and even arrogant. Especially when stressed, people tend to see themselves as either superior or inferior. The idea that we're equal in terms of our inalienable human rights is easy to forget when we're in conflict.

If ever there was a time to be humble about how little we understand, it is now. Gross pollution of the air, water and land, global warming, the colony collapse of honey bees, racial and ethnic hostility, religious intolerance, multiple wars, widespread poverty and hunger — what a depressing mess we've created for ourselves.

By any account, humanity emerged from a paradise and turned our world into a cesspool. Many insist the basic problem is greed, materialism, and the lust for power. But these problems go deeper ... to fear and ignorance.

The primary and fundamental ignorance is our failure to recognize humanity as a single family, living on a single planet, facing a single destiny. There is no escape for the arrogant, no matter how rich or powerful they may be.

The key to understanding humility is not in playing down our self-worth as individuals, but in learning to respect every other individual and treat them with dignity — to love our enemies, both foreign and domestic, to forgive their ignorance by remembering that in many ways we are all ignorant of many things.

And then we must educate each other. It is a fine art to educate people without making them feel wrong, stupid or inferior, especially when so much ignorance gets reinforced by political and religious institutions. But it can be done.

While there are many alternatives. nothing is as effective at managing stress and expanding awareness as the relaxed, closed-eye process commonly known as meditation. But just what is meditation? How does it compare to contemplation, self-hypnosis or chanting a mantra?

Many people say they can't meditate because they can't stop their thoughts. The good news is — You don't need to stop thinking to meditate. You practice meditation to slow-down your thoughts and eventually detach and disassociate from them.

The human thought process is not unlike getting emotionally caught-up in an exciting movie. You might become anxious, sad, angry or frightened as if the film were a real experience. But you can usually snap out of it by reminding yourself that it's just a movie. Similarly, meditation teaches you to look at your thought stream in a more objective way, realizing you don't have to believe and act upon every thought or feeling that drifts through your mind.

With so much media interest in Islam, the Muslim religion, and the Quran lately, you might expect to have heard or read something about the 1000 year old Sufi branch of Islamic mysticism. Sunday's Ageless Wisdom Mystery School

Though often thought of as a religion, especially in the Western World, Buddhism in fact is more of a philosophy or collection of wisdom teachings than any type of religion. Many teachers of Buddhism say the Enlightened Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama, was silent on the topic of God. Still other teachers say Buddha's concept of Divinity was too advanced to be discussed with his students. So he did not discuss it.

The above quotation by the current Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, suggests that most of what makes up religion is irrelevant to man's attempt to liberate himself from suffering and discontentment. Essentailly Buddhism, especially the more liberal, reformed sect known as Mahayana Buddhism, is more like a practice of psycho-therapy, wisdom teachings, and good mental health than a religion.

As you probably know, I hosted radio talk shows in Los Angeles for more than 30-years. During the last several years, before we brought our families to Maui, I was joined by my business partner Steve Snyder — both as a frequent guest on my KPFK-FM program and as co-host for nearly two years on KRLA-AM.

Our most popular format by far was the one we called "Open Conversation." It was no-holds-barred radio with questions and comments from callers on a wide variety of issues and topics. There was a sub-text, of course. Many people sensed it, but couldn't quite describe it.

The thread that ran through the program always began with the callers opening statement. Once they told us "what" they thought about this or that, we'd invariably go to, "Great. Now tell us why you think or feel that way?" It was fascinating!

Wow ... what a wonderful trip it's been. I can't begin to find the words to express how pleased we are by our first Maui Mindfulness Retreat. By all accounts, the week was fun, relaxing, inspiring, instructive and enlightening.

Oh, and the food — thanks, Carey, It was extraordinary. (Come for the food; stay for the Wisdom.)

Sunday's Ageless Wisdom Mystery School

Five years ago, a study by Cambridge University

claimed that 88% of the world's population

"believe in God" — down from 96% just five

years earlier. That means 12% are atheist or

agnostic, while 33% are Christian, 21% are

Islamic, 14% are Hindu, and 6% are Buddhist.

Less than one-quarter of 1% (0.22%) are Jewish,

which is more an ethnicity than a religion.

Religious scholars are virtually unanimous in their

agreement that God exists as a field of energy or

Spirit, and therefore does not have a physical

body or form. However, it's not at all uncommon

for religious lay people, especially Christians, to

think of God-the-Father as portrayed on the

ceiling of the Sistine Chapel — a grandfatherly

European man with a long white beard reaching

out from very far away. Of course, Christians also

equate the incarnated Christ, Jesus of Nazareth,

as God in all respects, though living for 33 years

in a separated physical body in a world of

separated form.

Yet, in some way, most religions teach that God

is Love. In the Christian gospel of John (1-4:8)

are the words, "Whoever is without love does

not know God, for God is love." In the Old

Testament in Genesis, we find the Hebrew word

"tolby" as a reference to God as love, goodness,

joy, beauty, grace, prosperity, and mercy.

In the Muslim Quran, the axiom of "tawhid"

asserts that, "There is no true love but Divine

Love." Similarly, Buddha taught, "The first

meditation is the meditation of love in which

thou must so adjust thy heart that thou longest

for the weal and welfare of all beings, including

the happiness of thine enemies." And in

Hinduism, love elevated beyond romance and

sexual pleasure is Love that expects nothing in

return and gives up all selfishness.

So just what is Divine Love? How is it different

from emotional love or the desire for material

things?

Sunday's Ageless Wisdom Mystery School

The center of news this week has been Cairo, Egypt where the 50% of those who live in abject poverty are being attacked in the center of the city by those who live in gated communities in air conditioned houses with swimming pools and spas. American news commentators and pundits have been scratching their heads all week, wondering why the growing discontent had not been recognized, and why the U.S.-backed dictator, Hosni Mubarak, didn't see it coming.

There is a similar state of denial in America where 25% of our children now live below the poverty level. Officially, unemployment stands at 10%, but in reality, it is over 20% — even higher among minorities and those without college degrees. Tens of millions of Americans have no health care. Pensions funds have been looted by Wall Street pirates. Our public schools are decrepit, highways and bridges are failing, and our railways are aged and accident-prone. The U.S. is first in the world in the number of people murdered as well as the number of people in prison.

How long before New York, Chicago and Los Angeles look like Cairo? How long before the poor and disposessed in America take to the streets in desperation with nothing to lose but their miserable lives?

For most Americans, the promise of free enterprise and liberty has been destroyed by imperial, monopolistic capitalism — a single, monstrous greed-machine that devours human souls as well as the mineral and agricultural resources of our planet. Corporations can be "persons" in the eyes of the law, but the largest and most powerful corporations have no conscience, no ethics, and no morality.

The solution will not be found in socialism, communism or any other top-heavy, over-centralized economic system. The solution will only be found in the human heart — a heart of flesh and spirit, not of stone.

One of the philosophical concepts of the Eastern World that challenges the common view of Western men and women is that time is merely an illusion. American and European cultures think of time as a number line with "Now" in the middle, the past trailing off to the left, and the future off to the right.

In Eastern philosophy, time exists only as an illusion of space — a fourth dimensional measurement of the distant between events. Time does have practical value. The Dali Lama wears a wristwatch and schedules events far into the future. Yet as a Buddhist, he knows that Ultimately there is but a pin-point of time, the rhythmic pulse of an infinite eternity unfolding — right here, right now.

A "fear of failure" is understandable, but "the fear of success" is more mysterious. Why would we be afraid of something we want? And if we are afraid of something, then why would we want it?

As a matter of fact, "the fear of success" is simply "the fear of failure" in disguise. It is a fear that even if we are successful, we'll fail sooner or later — in most cases, a false assumption from childhood. Did one or both of your parents ever say to you, "I just don't want you to get your hopes up." What's the veiled message in that statement? And when you misbehaved, did your parents tell you that your behavior was bad, or that YOU were bad little boy or girl.

Remember, too, that all fear is the fear of things unknown, but rarely dangerous. Studies have shown that a promotion at work can be as stressful as being fired, a wedding as stressful as a divorce, and a birth as stressful as a death in the family. Success can be as frightening as failure whenever both situations are essentially new and unknown.

In 1968, Swiss researcher Erich von Däniken published his now-famous book, Chariots of the Gods. While skeptics have consistently challenged his premise, theories, and evidence, von Däniken raised an interesting question for followers of all the world's religions — what evidence do you have? Why do you believe in God, gods or aliens, for that matter?

Do you believe alien-beings have visited planet Earth? Was Jesus Christ an astronaut from another solar system? After all, who did build the Pyramids of Giza, Stonehenge, and the idols of Easter Island, especially if today's most advanced technology cannot duplicate these fantastic monuments?

If you believe that Jesus of Nazareth is God, or Jehovah, Allah, Krishna, or some other Absolute Source of All Things, where's your evidence? Perhaps it's more important to examine "why" someone believes in an invisible God, rather than It's name, location, creed, or ceremonies of worship.

What is the relationship between our thoughts and feelings? Our formal schooling emphasized mental intelligence to the exclusion of emotional intelligence. Is there an EQ as well as an IQ? How do they work together?

Consider how much human speech and behavior is little more than unconscious reflexes ... action not chosen, but compulsively bursting out of us because, "I felt like it!" Emotionally motivated behavior often bypasses the logical mind and leaps into action ... or better said, reaction with little or no consideration of unintended consequences. On the other hand, it's rare that the most carefully considered mental decision does not carry some emotional feeling — positive, negative or a blend of both.

The interplay of mental thoughts and emotional feelings is a dance. It requires harmony and balance — but also, someone has to take the lead.

And by associating the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem with the Solstice and New Year, early Catholic fathers clearly saw The Birth of Light as a bridge from pantheism to a personal savior.

The good and bad in life, the happy and sad, the sweet and the bitter would probably balance themselves out, if not for human awareness. Viewing life as a series of opportunities tips the scale in your favor. On the other hand, a search for pity and sympathy often brings upon you much more grief and aggravation that you were bargaining for.

Beyond life's inevitable Yin and Yang, we can learn to recognize the overarching process of human development, an evolutionary unfolding of consciousness at much faster rates than the evolution of the physical species. In other words, we can choose to anticipate life's peaks and valleys, adjust and account for adversity and stay ahead of the curve.

And so, "into each life a little rain must fall." Negative thinkers and pessimists will naturally suffer more. We must further admit the widespread existence of extreme poverty in the world through no fault of the victims. And yet, It's a Wonderful Life — especially when we focus on helping others.

Most couples who seek counseling want adjudication rather than mediation. They want the counselor to decide who's right and who's wrong. Rarely do couples ask for what they truly need — ground rules that generate insight, understanding and acknowledgment.

Once you know your partner really understands how you feel, you won't care much whether they agree with you or not. In other words, most couples are not arguing about the issues they seem to be arguing about. At a deeper level, each of us would much rather be understood than be agreed with. But usually the partisans are just too busy defending themselves to listen carefully and honestly say, "I can understand how you'd feel that way."

To belong is to be part of something bigger than yourself. And it's surprisingly easy to do. Simply help someone. Be of service. Offer something of value while needing nothing in return.

The mystery is in "Why" we need each other. Solitude has its benefits, though few people seek them. Loneliness, on the other hand, is a common experience even when we're surrounded by other people. And loneliness is a sad, sometimes, depressing feeling. Prolonged loneliness or even just a sense of alienation can diminish one's very love of life itself, making your day to day existence seem meaningless and futile.

The words "purpose" and "meaning" are often used interchangeably, as in "the meaning and purpose of life." But, in fact, these are two very different words. "Purpose" is more universal — an objective reference to the reason something exists. "Meaning," however, is more complex because it implies a personal, subjective truth or set of values that others may not share.

Purpose can also be thought of as a destination, while meaning speaks to the significance of the journey. So it seems we must discern both a universal purpose and a personal meaning if life is to make sense to us.

Though there are many reasons for practicing forgiveness, nevertheless, most people choose to avoid it. The common refusal to "drop your grudge" suggests there must be some perceived value in holding on to your emotional pain. Dragging old hurt and upset feelings with you into your future, usually comes from a need to be right — a need to be right that's even stronger than the much more fulfilling desire to understand the full truth of things.

It is senseless, even masochistic, to believe that some form of control or other satisfaction could come from prolonging and exaggerating your suffering. There is a strange appeal to the belief that old pain will protect you from new pain. It's as if we're saying, "You can't hurt me. I'm already hurt."

A little kindness goes a long way, yet many people just can't seem to find reasons to be kind. They withhold their kindness as if it's in limited supply when, in fact, expressions of the simplest kindness reward the giver in equal or even greater measure.

Sunday's Ageless Wisdom Mystery School

While there are countless names for God in the religions of the world, few are as inclusive as Om, pronounced AUM. The word is sacred in Hinduism, Buddhism, and most other eastern philosophies. It is thought to be the Supreme Sound used to create all other sounds, indeed to invoke All Things. So spoken as a spiritual mantra, it is generally considered to be an effective prayer for beginning new projects.

The Sacred Om corresponds to the Eastern Trinity: Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva in much the same way that Christians view God as the Trinity they call: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. It can be argued that this same "Triune" view of God is found in ancient Egypt as King, Prince, and Queen as well as in the exalted Hebrew Sepheroth: Kether (Magician), Chokmah (High Priestess), and Binah (Empress).

There was a time, not so very long ago, when Americans were much more tolerant of their differences than today. Surely, we've suffered through racial bigotry and political intolerance since the nation's conception, but in the last decade or two, we've seen a growing contempt, at least in the political arena, for "the other side."

Progressive men and women were left stunned and slack-jawed by the willingness of the Bush Administration to run the nation without regard for anyone who disagreed with them. Now with Democrats controlling the federal government, Conservatives feel so badgered they're bringing assault rifles to town hall meetings about health care and using meaningless terms like "Nazi-Communist" to refer to President Obama.

Where is the middle ... the mainstream? Where are the moderates and pluralists? The love of wisdom and desire to truly understand has been largely supplanted by the need to be right ... at any cost.
